Some containers, particularly those never meant for planting, will require a small amount of modification to be suitable for plants. This would include drilling small holes in the bottom or placing a large layer of sand or gravel to allow for adequate drainage. Baskets or other cloth containers can be waterproofed to an extent to protect them and make them last longer.

When raising seedlings or small plants in pots for later transfer to a garden or landscaping, it can be disheartening to see dozens of plastic pots wasted because they cannot be recycled and are too flimsy to be reused. A great option is using peat pots. These are containers shaped from compressed peat. They will hold their shape for a few weeks while preparing plants for transplant and can be planted directly into the ground as the peat will quickly disintegrate. You can also create your own biodegradable pots with some old newspapers and a container to use as a mold. Simply line the inside of a pot with large strips of newspaper torn to size and slightly moisten to help hold their shape. You may prefer to tie a few pieces of string around the outside until planting.

By considering alternatives to regular garden pots, you can help the earth by reusing and recycling. Always keep your eye open for reusing old containers; these add charm to any container garden. Further using alternatives to plastic pots will help protect the environment and can even save money
